Cross-synthesis was also added, allowing the user to switch between two of a character's vocals built for the same language smoothly using a time-varying parameter. One of the new features is a "Growl" feature which allows vocals built for Vocaloid 4 to take on a growl-like property in their singing results. From the start this was never an easy task for the programmers behind the software, but from that beginning VOCALOID has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, spawning new musicians, albums, figurines and even concerts. VOCALOID began from the simple concept of synthesizing the human vocals for singing. VOCALOID and its succeeding versions are voice synthesizing applications that have been sold commercially since 2004.
